The Lancet
The History of the Royal Society of Medicine is readable, as well as superbly informative, giving also an insight into the evolution of medical practice in the UK over the past 200 years. It is also excellently produced and liberally illustrated, justifying the price. Any medical library should have a copy of this book, and many of those with an interest in the history of medicine (in the year 2000, the largest Section in the Society) or in the Royal Society of Medicine in particular, will wish to refer to it. Read the review in full.
Journal of Medical Biography
It is a pleasure to welcome without reservation a scholarly work of history which is also a work of art. The author, Penelope Hunting, deserves the highest praise for having distilled a fascinating story of London medicine out of a mass of archives, and so do the publishers for producing a superb volume which will in years to come stand comparison with the treasures of the Society’s own library.
Medical History
Hunting’s detailed account of the various societies that amalgamated for form the RSM is a valuable addition to medical history.
