Reviews
JAMA, Volume 288, 2002
So what we have here is a book engaging in style and novel in presentation covering subjects not usually treated in similar historical texts, such as biomechanics, arthroscopy, orthopaedic radiology, and the like. In so doing, it presents an amalgam of the history of these matters and instruction in their current science. It should prove of interest to students and practitioners who want to know why they’re doing what they’re doing while having a good read. Much indeed has been packed into its all-too-brief 246 pages, and my single disappointment is that I didn’t want it to end.

Foot & Ankle, 2002
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that allows one to see where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going. It shows that orthopaedic surgeons have a fine disregard for convention, standing on the shoulders of the giants before them, continuing to make wonderful and astounding progress in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems. Reading this book will make you happy and proud to be a part of this ongoing progress called the evolution of orthopaedic surgery.

Journal of Medical Biography, 2002
A fascinating book…They [the contributors] have concentrated on the remarkable explosion of advances in this subject that has taken place in recent decades. Professor Klenerman and his co-authors have produced a book that will appeal to orthopaedists, rheumatologists, and all of us with an interest in the history of medicine.

Medical Sciences History, Volume 18, 2002
packed with information that is fascinating in detail yet very readable.

Social History of Medicine, 2002
This book presents a thorough and scholarly account of the history of orthopaedics, with all the important references quoted at the end of each chapter. The book could therefore be used for serious academic study, or read from cover to cover…It should be a useful reference for writing papers, and especially for preparation of lectures for teaching.
