3 The Web browser and e-mail Overview of chapter A recent survey of Internet connectivity concluded that around 380 million people now have access to this medium. Although part of this growth in connectivity can be ascribed to curiosity and a wish not be left behind in the information revolution, repeated surveys on why individuals are connecting to the Internet shows two recurring (and obvious) themes. First, there is a desire to access the Web, and through this to gain access to information resources as well as services, such as online shopping and banking. The second is a wish to communicate cheaply and easily with friends and colleagues throughout the world. To achieve this, e-mail is recognised as the communications tool of choice. In this chapter we discuss these services - the Web and e-mail - focusing in particular on how to make effective use of the software to access these services. This chapter also discusses have you can configure your browser to filter out undesirable content and how to encrypt your email so that it cannot be accessed by anyone other than the intended recipients.
