The Patient's Internet Handbook
Section 1 - Introduction and getting started
Chapter 1: Consumer health information on the Internet
Chapter 2: Connecting to the Internet
Chapter 3: The Web Browser and email

In this introductory section - Chapters 1 to 3 - we provide an overview of health information on the Internet and consider what you need to be able to access and exploit this information. Chapter 1 highlights the range of health information and help available on the Internet and gives an overview of this book as a whole, along with some useful introductory tips. Chapter 2 discusses what you will need to get connected to the Internet and provides guidance on how to choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Once you are connected to the Internet you need to know how to make effective use of e-mail and the Web browser. This is the theme of Chapter 3, where, in addition to providing a guide to these tools the chapter also considers more advanced features, such as configuring your browser to filter out undesirable content and how to encrypt your e-mail to ensure that it cannot be accessed by anyone other than the intended recipient(s).
