3 - Your Health and the Internet Chapter 7: NHS Services and the Internet Chapter 8: Drug information on the Internet Chapter 9: Complementary and alternative medicine on the Internet Chapter 10: Pregnancy, childbirth and infant care information sources on the internet Overview This next section adopts a more subject-oriented approach to health information on the Internet. For many people the sole provider of healthcare is the NHS. In Chapter 7 we discuss how the NHS is using the Internet to disseminate information about the services it provides. Particular attention to paid to sources that allow consumers to compare one hospital with another. We also highlight a number of practical online services such as British Dental Association's 'Find-a-dentist' database and the NHS Pharmacy Directory. Drug information is the focus of Chapter 8, where in addition to giving an overview of the key information sources we discuss the role of online pharmacies and the potential dangers they pose. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a topic of growing importance - some 5 million UK citizens used the services of a CAM practitioner in the past year - and in Chapter 9 we discuss some of the best Internet sources for this subject. Recognising that it would be virtually impossible to try to give an overview of the information sources as they pertain to all types of CAM therapies, we have concentrated on the principal five disciplines - acupuncture chiropractic, herbal medicine, homeopathy and osteopathy. As with the earlier chapter on the NHS attention here is paid to how the Internet can be used to find local qualified practitioners. The final chapter in this section (chapter 10) looks at the information sources on the Internet pertaining to pregnancy, childbirth and infant care. Topics covered include test and scans, giving birth, and immunisation, as well as providing information about a number of interactive tools, such as an ovulation calculator and an online birth plan. |
